Legionella species are the causative agent of the human Legionnaires’ disease and the lesser form, Pontiac fever Legionella transmission is via aerosols — the inhalation of mist droplets containing the bacteria. Common sources include cooling towers, swimming pools, domestic hot-water systems, fountains, and similar dissemination that tap into a public water supply. Natural sources of Legionella include freshwater ponds and creeks. Once inside a host, incubation may take up to two weeks. This Screen Check offers a kit to collect the suspicious samples for appropriate screening.

Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory (EDLab), which is an ELITE CDC Certified Laboratory, will provide a final comprehensive report with 14 – 21 days. Quantitative results are given terms Colony Forming Unit (CFU).Common Symptoms to Look for: flu-like symptoms, including fever, chills, and dry cough, diarrhea and nausea.

Other advanced symptoms of pneumonia may also present. Collection Method for Legionella Testing Water sample is collected by drawing water directly from the test site in a sterilized screw cap collecting bottles (100-1000 ml). At least collect 100ml of water in case of cooling tower and 1000ml in case of potable water. However, it is recommended to collect 500 ml of water in case of cooling tower. DO NOT collect the heavy sediment at bottom of the tank and DO NOT scrape the sides of the tower. The ideal sample would be the clearest possible water. Sample must be sent to the laboratory within 24-48 hours for analysis.
